The (im)possibility of class identity: Reflections on a case of failed right-wing hegemony

Our choice to study the political behaviours of the ship repair workers of Piraeus, putting the emphasis on a professional group with specific socio-spatial characteristics, is operationalized in two levels: First, we examine the Far Right encroachment on areas with a strong working-class background, concerning both the preconditions and the limitations of such an encroachment. Specifically, we examine the electoral geography of the wider Piraeus and West Attica, which constitute the place of residence for most of the ship repair and shipbuilding workers of Attica. Second, we examine the individual and collective characteristics of those workers, establishing a preliminary connection between their political attitudes (union participation) and the wider social and political context.
