The Impact of Education on Skill Development
In recent years, there has been an increasing number of publications regarding the various skills individuals need, not only to find and maintain employment but also to meet the multiple demands of modern life and be active citizens. At the same time, there is growing support for the idea that schools should equip young people with a wide range of skills to help them navigate the challenges of life in contemporary multicultural societies. Questions about the role of schools, both formal and informal education, the role of the family and social environment, the factors that influence skill development, the different skills individuals should develop alongside their education, and the inequalities that arise in relation to opportunities for skill development are being raised more frequently on a global scale. In this paper, we attempt to answer these questions based on the results of the PIAAC (Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies) survey. According to these results, all forms of education are the most decisive factor in skill development, and individuals with higher levels of education achieve significantly better results in literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills.
