Suites, Ties, and Blue Collars at the Ballot Box: Aspects of Class Voting, 2014-2019

This study aims to examine key aspects of class voting during the period 2014-2019. The concept of class voting here does not refer to a universal interpretation of electoral behavior based on a single criterion (in this case, social class), but rather to that segment of the electorate whose class position is significantly related to their electoral preference. The findings presented confirm the conventional wisdom regarding the middle-class dominance of New Democracy (ND) over SYRIZA, while also highlighting changes in the class identity and voting patterns of working-class segments. In a context of further individualization of labor regulation, prolonged organizational and political disorganization of trade unions, and a retreat of organized Left intervention, the conservative shift at the lower levels of the class hierarchy may prove to be a significant factor in the post-recession electoral geography of the country.
