Space and time of the rejection of immigrants in the city centre of Athens

One of the presentations in the seminar series, recorded in this volume, that of May 12, 2011, regarding issues of surveillance and policing of urban space, was unexpectedly interrupted when a protest march of approximately 500 people, mostly holding Greek flags and chanting slogans against "foreigners," ended in attacks on Arab and Asian migrants in the streets surrounding the building of the National Center for Social Research. From the windows on Athinas Street, we could see the crowd cheering the threats and violence, under the discreet surveillance of the present police force. It was perhaps the most dramatic and certainly the most collective moment of the pogrom that followed the murder of 44-year-old Manolis Kandaris by two Afghan perpetrators two days earlier, on 3rd September Street.
