Avoiding
understandings of the media as an impersonal, dominant institution that shapes
public opinion, mediates reality and exercises power, our research project
approaches and highlights them as a multiple field of encounter of subjects
that constantly signify their function in practice, forming interactive spheres
of mutual influence. The ownership, regulatory framework and formal principles
of the media are placed at the centre of a discourse-centred approach to them,
in direct relevance to the themes of freedom, equality, pluralism, journalistic
responsibility and citizen participation in public debate. The proposed
research sets as milestones four events that touched their structural substance
and triggered the media debate: the closure of ERT, the auction of TV licenses,
the closure of Mega and the recent attack on Skye, taking into account that the
first two are the result of the government policy in question. It will thus
attempt to bring to the fore the discourse of the media and journalists on the
media itself, shedding light on their self-referential function and the ways in
which they themselves constitute their role and framework. At the same time,
through an interdisciplinary approach, it will bring them into dialogue with
their audiences, going beyond the one-way recording of attitudes towards them
and highlighting the arguments, emotions and key issues that concern individuals.
Through this synthesis, the ways in which the gap between the rules governing
the media and their operation in practice is maintained or challenged will
emerge.
