The experience of crisis in rural areas. Socio-cultural impacts, identities and survival strategies of households.

The purpose of this project is to explore aspects, dynamics and experiences of the crisis in the Greek countryside. Contemporary crisis in rural areas is the composite result of both recent (and previous) revisions of the Common Agricultural Policy and the changing relations between rural and urban space. These relationships are constantly affecting employment opportunities and incomes (through pluri-activity, off-farm employment, re-location in agricultural areas) as well as existing and expected identities and roles. Drawing on field research in the Greek countryside -on the basis of anthropological and geographical approach- the project focuses on three main points: i) how individuals (farmers, workers, newcomers, returnees, etc.) experience the current crisis, ii) which problems do they face and what survival strategies do they develop in the context of both work and family, and within their social relationships, choices and cultural needs, iii) how do all the aforementioned articulate a new model of agriculture and of rural society in the post productivist era.
