City planning and public space in the eastern coast of Attica: The birth of a problematic “city”.

The investigation of the coastal zone of Eastern Attica showed that as the urbanization of former areas of second residences intensifies, the difficulties in the implementation of town planning tools arise due to the pre-existing organization and structure of the settlement fabric and the continuation of building practicing incompatible with the planning intentions. The exploration of the housing development of the last few decades in demarcated areas which were integrated into the city plan by the implementation of the urbanization and land-use mechanisms established in the 1980s in Greece showed that there is a close relationship between the anarchic nature of the previous settlement development with the creation of a 'new' wider development area, involved by a mix of suburban, rural and tourist development that has to be reconsidered. In particular, the public open spaces were studied and their spatial and social function was assessed in the wider coastal region of Eastern Attica.
